About Students

Students in NYU Wagner’s Finance Capstone Program are graduate students pursuing their Master of Public Administration in Public & Nonprofit Management & Policy with a specialization in finance, budgeting, and public financial management. These students are highly analytical and passionate about leveraging data and financial strategy to drive sustainable social and economic outcomes. 


They have academic and professional experience in public budgeting, financial modeling, capital planning, investment analysis, risk management, and performance measurement. Many bring backgrounds in consulting, government finance, impact investing, or nonprofit fiscal strategy. Through the Capstone experience, students apply their quantitative, strategic, and systems thinking skills to help organizations build financial resilience, optimize resource allocation, and evaluate funding models.

Program Goals
Over the course of the engagement, student teams will: 

  1. Apply financial management frameworks to real-world challenges across the public, nonprofit, and mission-aligned private sectors.

  2. Conduct financial and operational analyses including budget forecasting, scenario planning, and cost-benefit evaluation.

  3. Develop tools and recommendations to enhance financial sustainability, investment readiness, or capital strategy.

  4. Perform qualitative and quantitative research including stakeholder interviews, market scans, and policy reviews.

  5. Deliver a polished final report and presentation with actionable insights and strategies tailored to the organization’s goals.

  6. Gain consulting and project management experience, while strengthening professional communication and teamwork skills.

Industry partners participating in the NYU Wagner Capstone program are expected to actively support the student consulting experience by providing a well-defined project and consistent engagement throughout the academic year.

Participating organizations should be prepared to:

• Identify a clearly defined project challenge aligned with the program’s topic areas and suitable for a small graduate student consulting team.
 • Designate a project manager who will serve as the primary point of contact for the student team throughout the engagement.
 • Participate in key project milestones, including the project kickoff, periodic check-ins, and the final presentation of recommendations.
 • Provide relevant background information, documentation, and context that will help students understand the organization, its operations, and the project challenge.
 • Offer timely feedback on student questions, research findings, and draft deliverables to help guide the team’s work.
 • Maintain regular communication with the student team and faculty advisor as needed during the project.

Projects should be scoped so they are feasible for a small team of graduate students to complete within the academic term while still providing meaningful value to the partner organization.
