Project Synopsis: Challenge/Opportunity
Our organization has launched the Coalition for Healthy Food in Newark Schools. Our challenge is our desire to develop school-wide policy that expands the purchase, processing and offering of more whole foods, plant-based milk, lactose-free milk and plant-based protein sources.

Project Synopsis: Activities/Actions Required
  • Research current policies supporting food offerings within Newark Board of Education (NBOE)
  • Research and culminate best practices for policy development in implementing whole foods, plant-based milk, lactose-free milk and plant-based protein sources within comparable communities
  • Develop and review potential policies with the Coalition for Healthy Food in Newark Schools and the NBOE Food Service Director
  • Present policy suggestions to the School Board for adoption
  • Outreach to school food service staff, food service managers and students for aid in policy implementation planning

Project Synopsis: Expected Results
This project would prove a success for our organization if the following measurable results were accomplished:
  • Policy for implementing whole foods, plant-based milk, lactose-free milk and plant-based protein sources is developed and adopted by Newark Board of Education
  • There is an increase of engagement of stakeholders, food service employees, community members and students in the policy development process
  • With post-testing, the following is determined: 
    • There is an increase in participant knowledge of school food system, regulations, related programs and essential staff
    • There is an increase in participant understanding of collective impact, advocacy and public policy
    • There is an increase in potential active participation in local policy, advocacy groups and/or school-based parent organizations
    • Over 90% of policy development participants have a nutritional knowledge base of how and which food sources positively support student growth, wellness and academic potential.
