Details
Project Title Accessible Parking Data Project
Project Topics Legal, Regulatory, Compliance Research & Development
Skills & Expertise
Project Synopsis: Challenge/Opportunity
United Spinal's Accessible Parking Working Group has a goal of updating the U.S. Access Board ADA Standards for the number of accessible parking spots available in parking lots. To do this, we need to know background information such as the number of placards currently issued by states compared to the number of vehicles.
Project Synopsis: Activities/Actions Required
We need research conducted in order to find the number of parking placards that have been issued by states, to compare them to the number of registered vehicles per state, and use that data to demonstrate the immediate need of updating U.S. Access Board ADA Standards for the number of accessible parking spots by size of parking lot or garage. We need to collect the data from each state, organize it, and analyze it (https://www.access-board.gov/ada/guides/chapter-5-parking/).
Project Synopsis: Expected Results
Our goal is to convince the federal government, through the U.S. Access Board, Department of Transportation, and Department of Justice, that the ADA Standards for the number of accessible and van accessible parking spots available in parking lots and garages, must be updated to meet the needs of the increasing number of people in the disability community.
