Project Synopsis: Challenge/Opportunity
The Food Brigade is a well-established nonprofit organization dedicated to combating hunger in northern New Jersey through the operation of food pantries. The organization excels in community engagement and resource distribution; however, it faces a critical challenge in ensuring that individuals without reliable transportation can access these resources.
The primary business challenge is the lack of reliable, affordable, and timely transportation for individuals experiencing food insecurity. This gap significantly impacts The Food Brigade's ability to fulfill its mission, as many individuals in need are unable to reach food pantries. This challenge not only affects the organization's operational efficiency but also limits its impact on the community.
The current consequences of this challenge include missed opportunities to serve those in need, decreased client satisfaction, and an inability to fully leverage available food resources. It also highlights a broader systemic issue within the state’s food security efforts, where transportation is a key barrier to accessing food assistance.
This project offers students the opportunity to tackle this challenge by researching and developing a transportation solution tailored to the needs of the community. Students will engage in phases of research, stakeholder analysis, solution design, and pilot testing, providing a comprehensive learning experience.
For students, this project is ideal as it combines theoretical knowledge with practical application. They will gain valuable skills in consulting, policy analysis, operations, and stakeholder management. Additionally, this project is meaningful as it addresses a real-world challenge with significant social impact, providing students with a sense of purpose and relevance in their academic pursuits.
Project Synopsis: Activities/Actions Required
  1. Conduct a comprehensive needs assessment to understand transportation barriers faced by clients.
  2. Research existing transportation models used by similar organizations.
  3. Engage with stakeholders, including clients, transportation providers, and local government officials, to gather insights and feedback.
  4. Analyze the feasibility of various transportation solutions, including partnerships with ride-sharing companies or community shuttle services.
  5. Develop a detailed proposal for a pilot transportation program tailored to The Food Brigade's needs.
  6. Design an evaluation framework to measure the effectiveness and impact of the proposed solution.
  7. Collaborate with software developers to explore potential technological tools to support the transportation model.
  8. Prepare a cost-benefit analysis to assess the financial implications of the proposed solution.
  9. Present findings and recommendations to The Food Brigade’s leadership team.
  10. Document the project process and outcomes for academic and organizational use.
